Settlement of the area dates from the 1838, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1890s, with expansion continuing in the 1920s. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place between the 1950s and 1970s, aided by public housing construction. The population declined slightly during the early 1990s, and then generally increased slightly between 1996 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
